Tories Claim 12-Year-Old Girls, Rape Victims, Gave Consent to Sexual Abusers.

Today, the Government’s executive agency for the Ministry of Justice, denied 700 girls as young as 12 compensation for sexual abuse. A body of charities including Barnardo’s, Victim Support and Rape Crisis revealed the scandal after a freedom of information request.

The charity body are outraged at the decisions made, which effectively told girls that they had consented to the sexual abuse, therefore were not due any compensation from their attackers. The ruling is regardless if the attacker is found guilty and sent to prison.

A key example given in the Guardian relates to a gang of older men who were jailed 30 years after raping and assaulting a 14-year-old girl. The ruling meant in this case the girl would receive no compensation because she “had not been the victim of non-consensual sexual acts”. This goes completely against legal and societal norms, where having sex with an underaged child is classed as rape, which is by nature non-consensual.

A second case involved as 12-year-old girl who had been given excessive amounts of alcohol by an older man, taken into the woods, and sexually assaulted. The man pleaded guilty to the charges, however no form of compensation was provided to the young girl involved.

Unfortunately, the sexual abuse of young children in the UK is nothing new. Paedophilia has been covertly woven in the fabric of our society. Previously a dossier with evidence against 40 MPs and a host of BBC stars was said to exist in the hands of the Home Office, however the document was either lost or destroyed, in what some called a cover-up. Notable BBC stars such as Sir Jimmy Saville have been shockingly exposed for decades of mass child abuse, even when it was known to officials.

Given the scale of child abuse in our society, it is vital that the government take urgent action to review the previous rulings, and alter the guidelines that are put in place. It is wholly unacceptable and abhorrent that children as young as 12, can be deemed to have consented to sexual acts with those much older than themselves.

Comments from the Ministry of Justice claims a review into the handling of child sex abuse cases in underway.
